February 22, 2008, Newsletter Issue #248: Pregnancy Constipation

Tip of the Week

Constipation affects at least half of all pregnant women. It comes from the pressure of your growing uterus on your rectum at the same time that pregnancy hormones slow the passage of food through your digestive tract. Some iron pills can make constipation worse. To avoid or relieve the problem, eat high-fiber foods such as cereals, whole-grain breads, and fresh fruits and vegetables every day. Drink plenty of water -- at least six to eight glasses a day. Prune juice may also be helpful. Regular exercise can also help ease constipation and leave you feeling more fit and healthy besides.
